Jordan Petra Highlights
This Jordan Photo Tour is a visually rich journey through one of the Middle East’s most diverse landscapes, moving from ancient cities to vast deserts and surreal natural formations. The tour begins in Amman, where layered hills, historic neighborhoods, and modern life create compelling cityscapes best captured from elevated viewpoints and during evening light.
From Amman, travel north to the remarkably preserved Roman city of Jerash, where colonnaded streets, arches, and temples offer strong compositions built on symmetry and scale. The day concludes at the Amman Citadel, photographing ancient ruins against sweeping views of the capital as golden hour light settles over the city.
Following the historic King’s Highway, the journey continues through dramatic landscapes and culturally significant sites before arriving in Petra. Entering through the Siq, the reveal of the Treasury unfolds through shadow, scale, and color. Afternoon light brings depth to Petra’s carved facades, tombs, and amphitheater, revealing the craftsmanship of this ancient city.
An early return to Petra allows for softer light and fewer visitors, ideal for photographing the Treasury, Royal Tombs, and the Monastery. Elevated viewpoints offer sweeping perspectives that showcase the scale and beauty of the rose-colored landscape.
The pace shifts in Wadi Rum, where red sand dunes, towering rock formations, and open desert create striking compositions. Golden hour delivers dramatic light, while night photography under pristine skies reveals the Milky Way and Galactic Core above the desert.
The journey concludes at the Dead Sea, where abstract salt formations, mineral textures, and turquoise water offer minimalist compositions. A final float in the hypersaline water provides an iconic closing moment before departure, rounding out a tour defined by variety, depth, and unforgettable photographic experiences.
This tour is a perfect compliment to the Egypt Tour Workshop that runs from 12-20 May, why not join us for both tours! For more information on the the Egypt tour.
Itinerary
Day 1: Begin the journey in Amman, photographing the city’s layered hills, historic neighborhoods, and modern urban life. From elevated viewpoints, capture panoramic cityscapes that reveal the capital’s unique blend of ancient heritage and contemporary rhythm, with opportunities for blue hour and atmospheric evening imagery.
Day 2 – Jerash & Amman Citadel
Spend the day photographing the remarkably preserved Roman ruins of Jerash, where colonnaded streets, arches, and temples provide strong leading lines, symmetry, and scale. In the afternoon, shift to the Amman Citadel to capture sweeping views over the city, finishing with golden hour and sunset light illuminating the Temple of Hercules and Umayyad Palace above the capital.
Day 3 – King’s Highway to Petra
Travel along the historic King’s Highway, stopping to photograph dramatic landscapes and culturally significant sites such as Madaba and Mount Nebo. Arrive in Petra in the afternoon and enter through the Siq, where shifting light and towering rock walls lead to the iconic Treasury. As the day unfolds, photograph Petra’s carved facades, tombs, and amphitheater in warm, late-day light.
Day 4 – Petra at First Light
Return to Petra early to photograph the Treasury in soft morning light and with fewer visitors. Continue deeper into the ancient city to capture the Royal Tombs, Roman Theater, and the Monastery, with opportunities for wide-angle landscapes, architectural details, and elevated viewpoints such as the High Place of Sacrifice.
Day 5 – Wadi Rum
Journey into the vast desert landscapes of Wadi Rum, photographing red sand dunes, towering rock formations, and natural arches during golden hour. As night falls, take part in an astrophotography session under some of the darkest skies in the region, capturing the Milky Way and Galactic Core rising above the dramatic desert terrain.
Day 6 – Dead Sea & Departure
Photograph the striking salt formations and abstract shoreline patterns of the Dead Sea, where white mineral crusts contrast with turquoise water. Capture minimalist compositions and reflections before experiencing the iconic float, offering unique photographic perspectives, and conclude the journey with final images from this otherworldly landscape.
